Blood from a Silver Cross is the fourth Kat Redding book by E.S. Moore. I would recommend that anyone interested in reading this book first read the rest of the Kat Redding books, starting with To Walk the Night. This book starts fast, and assumes that the reader is familiar with the characters, so I would definitely not recommend it as a standalone novel.
The main character is Kat, a vampire who hates vampires in general and especially hates that she is one. Despite going against supernaturals that feed off of humans, she also fights a mysterious group called the “Left Hand” whose goal is to completely eliminate all supernaturals. She lives with two other Supernaturals, the werewolf Jeremy and Ethan, who has been marked by a demon. When the Left Hand attack the Luna Cult (of which Jeremy is a part), it’s Kat’s job to find Nathan, who is second in command in the werewolf pack. Kat’s job becomes more complicated when a werewolf from her past shows up, and when she has to deal with the pack leader’s not-quite-right seeming new love interest.
This book is a fast paced read, and it is packed with plenty of action. It also does not let romance overwhelm the plot line like a lot of urban fantasy tends to these days. I would say that it’s an easy and engaging read, and might be a good book to kick back with on a rainy day.
The book would have been much better for me if I had liked the main character a bit more. Kat is kind of a loner, extremely angry, and she has trouble connecting with people. I also wish that some of the secondary characters were a bit more developed. My biggest problem with this novel is that it did not stand out to me in any way. The writing is alright, nothing special, and the same is true of the plot. There are minor predictable plot twists, and no scenes that really make you take notice. It is completely mediocre urban fantasy. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t great either. I would definitely recommend this book to fans of the first three Kat Redding Books, and those that are fans exclusively of urban fantasy.
Overall I would rate this novel 6/10.
Blood From a Silver Cross will be available February 6th 2014.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in return for an honest review.
